Paying for treatment in California

California calls its Medicaid program Medi-Cal, and it covers buprenorphine treatment. 946 clinics here accept it.

Accreditation across California

In California it counted 1,504 facilities, of which 58% hold Joint Commission or CARF accreditation and 68% are state licensed. 179 are certified opioid treatment programs, meaning they can dose methadone on site.

What to expect at a first visit

Since the federal X-waiver was removed in 2023, any DEA-registered clinician can prescribe buprenorphine, which widened the number of prescribers well beyond specialty addiction clinics.
